Instructor: Jim Phillips (view profile)
Guest: Carol Deppe

This is the last in this series of interviews with Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener — Carol is the ideal instructor for the concepts we’ve been discussing throughout this series because she lives what she teaches. This episode is the last in our series with special guest Carol Deppe. If you haven't yet, grab a copy of The Resilient Gardener in our shop.

The Resilient Gardener

As a part of your resilient garden you will need to have strategies in mind on how to care for your plants and trees if the electricity fails or the pump dies or the well goes dry.  How do you plant so as to achieve maximum water resilience toward such events?

Should you face a future where there is no garden store from which to purchase fertilizer and other soil amendments, how will you maintain soil productivity and fertility?  What can you experiment with and learn to do now that will help you should you ever need to garden without buying or importing anything?

Enjoy listening to this week's program, and then share what you've learned in the comments below!

Instructor: Jim Phillips
Jim Phillips is a nationally known speaker and teacher who has professionally taught thousands of classes all across the United States for 40 years. For a number of years prior to this career, his hobby was teaching cold weather safety & survival.

Jim is a strong advocate of self-reliance living and family preparedness. He developed an entire preparedness curriculum by asking himself the question "What if?" and then setting out to discover what actually does and does not work.

The answers he seeks (and then teaches) must be based on true principles derived from first hand experience. Above all else, he believes that attitude and practical knowledge is more critical to survival than having a bunch of "stuff."

Guest: Carol Deppe

Carol Deppe is the embodiment of The Resilient Gardener. She has a Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University, has been experimenting with crops and gardening in Corvallis, Oregon since 1979.  She is a freelance plant breeder specializing in developing public-domain crops for Oregon growing conditions, sustainable agriculture, and human survival.

Her writing includes The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-reliance in Uncertain Times, Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties: The Gardener’s and Farmer’s Guide to Plant Breeding and Seed Saving, Tao Te Ching: A Window to the Tao through the Words of Lao Tzu, and The Tao of Vegetable Gardening: Cultivating Tomatoes, Greens, Peas, Beans, Squash, Joy, and Serenity.
