Sustainable Gardening Overview (Part 2)
Instructor: Jim Phillips (view profile)
Guest: Dr. Fred Bohman
*This is part two that completes the program started back on April 5, 2016 — the major technical problems have been corrected.
There will likely be a time in the future when growing foods will make all the difference in your health and well-being, in fact might even determine if you survive or not. There are things you need to do now to prepare for the future.
Today’s hobby gardens are a place to start, but are rarely something you could actually live on. There are attitudes and practices you must develop now in order to be ready for such a future. Prepare the soil to nourish and support the plants that will then nourish and support you. Don’t pull all the weeds; learn to eat many of them because they are more nutritious than some of the vegetables people typically grow in their hobby garden. Learn how to fertilize your garden when you can no longer buy fertilizer.
Being prepared to gracefully make it through any serious long-term disasters requires one to be in fair physical health and in top mental and emotional condition before it happens. Being able to meet your long-term nutritional needs during times of high stress and great physical labor is of paramount importance.
